Animation is the illusion of movement. It doesn't matter how you pull it off just as long as you have a way of doing it in order to bring your characters to life.

How I feel about Warcraft

Posted by VictorVonVice - September 7th, 2010

Yeah yeah, the topic of this rant is old as hell and whatever I say now, wont make a difference. Thing is though, I'm not interested in talking about World of Warcraft and how it took the (social) lives of many people we knew. What I want to talk about is the RTS series that inspired the pit of all evil, Warcraft. Now recently, I've rediscovered Warcraft 3, a game I haven't touch since my early high school years. A game that back then would ass raped my old computer a new one and cost me a dozen upgrades in order to play the fucking thing but as it stands now, my shitty laptop laughs at the little requirements. Playing through this old classic really brought me back on why I enjoyed the franchise so much and how I would love the thought of a Warcraft 4. But Seeing as Blizzard has pretty much made a self producing goldmine of the franchise, my vision of a new fantasy RTS is pretty much fucked.

This really sucks because I fell in love with the world (of warcraft!) when it was a fun and addicting RTS game, not an MMORPG that would give me nothing more than social problems and minus £15-£20 (whatever it is now!) a month just so I can get the bet out of the game. Yeh, my other problem is that I cant stand online RPG's for the reason I'm fucking crap at them. I remember years ago when I tried playing an online RPG(I think it was Ultima Online or runespace, not too sure). 2 minutes of playing the damn thing, I got killed because I had the daft idea that my soldier character was strong enough to take on a skeleton soldier. For the next hour, I spent running around as a ghost, trying to get someone to pay for a resurrection or something. So being the young and impatient shit I was (yet, ironic because RTS games require patience), I gave up and with every second try I gave the damn game, the experience is always the same.

So how the fuck would I cope with an MMORPG that I would have to pay for each month, just for to get my ass raped everytime. I dunno about you guys but thats got to be one hell of a bad relationship where your paying for everything and get nothing out of it but misery and pain.

So yeah, I love Warcraft but not "World of" Warcraft. simple as that. Blizzard makes awesome gave and its nice to see that some of their older titles are getting attention once again like StarCraft and Diablo. But it just pains me to see what was once my favourite franchise, forgetting that it was once an awesome RTS back in the day and continuing to suck off nerds for 15 a month and seeing as Blizard is controlled by Activision, I doubt I'll ever see the end of it. :\

Thumbs up buddy, thumbs up...

There is a possibility of a Warcraft 4 since 1-3 were about the Lich King and World of Warcraft finally kills him, it's actually a perfect time to make a new enemy which both series can milk. Though actually I think you'd have to wait until the end of the next expansion since it changes the world of Warcraft.

Actually you don't have to be killed constantly in the game, I've played high into levels with minimal death and even took on high level dungeons while still considered a noob. They toned down the difficulty and if you know the game right it really is fun. I WANNA PUNCH A GNOME AGAIN!
Though 15 a month still is annoying as hell >.>, wish it could be at least 10.

Blizzard isn't actually controlled by Activision btw (yet that is), they merged and both companies are just doing their own things at the moment, there probably will be some cross-overs in the future but I don't think Blizzard would just let them run rampant, yet that is.

In the end I still agree with you, paying to die (at least that much) sucks, and I'd like to see my generation play a new Warcraft.

paying that much to play a month is just a dick move on Blizzard's end. sure I pay to play on Live but that's merely £35 a year. £180 a year is far too much for a video game. yet at the same time, its better than any free MMORPG..?

I dont like WOW,
but I love Warcraft 3

lol, pretty much in a nutshell

I can only agree with you. Warcraft 3 was revolutionary.
World of Warcraft however might be a commercial success but is also the worst MMORPG there is. I mean, even other MMORPG gamers spit on WoW players.
Blizzard saw how addicted Diablo II players had been and merged it with the Warcraft Universe into a massive online game.
But derp, everything has been said before.

You're just ranting about this because the servers are down, aren't you. Tsk tsk.

WOW SUX, IT IS KILLING PEOPLE LIVES !
WARCRAFT 1-3 awesome.
:D

I spent all of highschool making maps for WC3, lol. I loved playing the mods on there.

I have never played WOW, but I love Warcraft 2.

What, I never played 3. Be quiet while I comfort my good ol' Win95 computer :(

i quit wc3 for sc2 but wc3 was an amazing game, i agree

You know, the people who insult the game have never played it. And those that have can usually give good enough reasons about why they dislike it. You haven't played it and thus, you're crafting an opinion about it in ignorance. Why would you make a news post stating how much you dislike a game you have no intent to attempt playing because you had a bad experience with a game when you were young? Where's the point in trying to give people your completely baseless opinion?
I'll agree that MMOs are not everybody's cup of tea, and that World of Warcraft is far from perfect (still, it's far better than most MMOs) but the insults made towards this game are usually pretty idiotic. I can accept when someone gives a real argument as to why they dislike something, but this isn't a real argument.

Now that I think about it, I'd rather not start an argument in the comment section of someone I don't know. Sorry, just ignore my post. I took your post too negatively. I'll keep my opinion, you keep yours. I apologize.

I don't recall saying that World Of Warcraft sucked. I was just expressing how its sucks that the franchise moved to an MMORPG and doesn't show any sign of having a true 4th sequel to the RTS franchise. Of course, I never played WoW and I don't think I'll ever intend. I had a number of friends that played the game and in a couple of occasions , I was back seat gaming with them during their sessions. the concept is interesting but I would never pay £15 a month for to play a video game....ever.

I realized that your post was more mourning Warcraft than insulting World of, which is the main reason I tried to apologize.
The $15 does make sense considering the upkeep of a game and just how much game you're getting, but it's totally understandable that people don't want to pay that. Paying that much sucks and my inability to afford it was the main reason I stopped playing.
Yet again, sorry.

The thing with World of Warcraft, is that it is so good, that it IS worth paying 15$ a month for. That's how brilliant it is.
The least you could do is try a free trial.

Just a few clarifications:

World of Warcraft's subscription cost is 15 Dollars a month for US customers. It's about £9 for European customers (Yes, we pay more than the yanks. Blame Tax systems) but you pay less if you pay for longer slots at a time like 3/6/12 Month intervals. I personally never did as i've sporadically taken months off and saved money not paying for time when i'm not paying.

WoW has that subscription cost because it is constantly being updated and moderated. Other MMO's pale in comparision to WoW's level of customer service (which is far from superb I might add, getting a GM response can take hours at peak times) and subscriber numbers.

What puzzles me is why Xbox Live has the subsciption cost, when you have to pay for the extra maps and shit ontop of that. I believe the PS3 doesnt have the initial cost?

And you wouldn't get your ass handed to you in WoW if you played on a Normal server, PvP is an opt in thing on those. The first 20 or so levels are incredibly easy to get through these days compared when I started about 4 years ago, some call that pandering to casuals, i call it making the game less of a twat to play.

Though this "easymoding" seems to extend to endgame raiding, which (while cutting out a lot of annoying shit that had nothing to do with the actual boss encounters like having to bring specific character classes even if the player behind them was crap) have gotten just a little too easy to get through.

And holy shit have i gone on a tangent. Warcraft 3 is still a damn good game, but I was always better at Starcraft, and I was still really shit compared to my friends on there. I'm not that great at microing (is that it?), i just sorta make Zerglings by the billion and send them off in some vague direction :)

Guess you'll have to try Starcraft 2 to tide you over perhaps?
